The “Dia de los Muertos” or “Day of the Dead” is one of the most important holidays in Mexico. Like its northern counterpart, this special day is celebrated around the end of October but unlike Halloween, the Dia de los Muertos has nothing to with fear. Instead of being afraid of spirits that might come back to haunt, the Day of the Dead is a time to celebrate the memories and lives of loved ones who have passed away. You could say that we welcome the spirits of family and friends back into our lives because we miss everything about them. However, the celebrations are happier rather than sad and in Playa del Carmen, we celebrate with performances and a variety of fun activities in addition to making our own personal shrines to loved ones.
It’s an exciting time to visit the Riviera Maya and a trip to the festivities at Xcaret Park is a must! This year’s celebrations will put the focus on the ancient Mayan cultures of Chiapas with dances and other exhibitions of Chiapan traditions. Under the waves of the adjacent Caribbean Sea, a non-stop celebration of life will also be happening and the best way to experience it is by scuba diving Playa del Carmen. Let us help you dive Playa del Carmen to see why we love venturing beneath the waves. A coral reef lies just offshore, stunning cenotes are just a short drive away, and other beautiful dives are begging to be experienced when you dive Riviera Maya.
