Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Playa Del Carmen is located on the Riviera Maya just under an hour from Cancun Airport. This Fishermen's' village has become the favorite place for dive vacations because of the underwater river system AND rich coral reef that are home to an array of sea creatures and rich coral reefs.
The coral reef in the Riviera Maya is the second longest barrier reef.
There are different levels from 33 feet to 45 feet for diving that allow divers with little experience to experience Caribbean fish like angel fish, parrot fish, stingrays, moral eels and turtles. Some of the deeper sites might require a different level of experience.
There is a mix of things to explore from reefs to wreck diving and of course the famous caverns.

Cavern Diving

You need a normal certification to explore the 15 caverns in Playa del Carmen. You can experience caverns with interesting characteristics and sunlight effects, unusual flora and animals. A certified guiding instructor will escort you through the caverns if you are not familiar with the area

Cave Diving

Cave diving Playa del Carmen is different to diving through the caverns, you need more than just a basic diving certificate.
With the right certification and experience, you can explore the vast cave systems that are regarded to be some of the best in the world. Your guide should be able to provide you with information on the local regulations that cave divers are required to adhere to

There are different conditions in the caves, some are harder some easier for shallow depth to sediment caves that are fragile and require care when you are diving. The caves have lots of interesting stalagmites and stalactite column formations

A Day of Cave Diving Playa Del Carmen

Plan is stage diving in cave , using side mount equipment.

Early morning wake up , 6:30 am , have a nice breakfast

To get in a hard day , 10 minutes to check on line news and socials , than get ready for the meeting in Pluto Dive Shop.

At 7:45 Marcia , Fulvio and Me meet at the shop and start to load the equipment in the truck , 3 tanks each diver , the plan is a long cave diving , pressure check , light check , video and equipment check , ready to go.

At 8:20 we are on the highway direction to the cenote Dos Pisos , just after Tulum , we do a brief stop in a market to buy some soft drinks and water , is really hot and we need to be hydrated , than we have to drive 1 hour to get at the place , we call the owner to advise we are arriving in a bit , we stat to talk about life and our bucket list , after one hour drive we are at the dive site , it is time to set up gear and take everything down to the cave entrance , after 40 minutes all is ready and we jump in the water , bubble check , equipment check and match , plan review , gas , time and depth , team position and we start our long dive , plan is 90 minutes in….

Descending in a small and silty passage we move on the main line slowly , after 10 minutes the cave open up and show us an amazing place with a lot of speleothems , we stop to take some photo shots and than we move over, 35 minutes in the dive is time to leave the stage tanks , proper signal , switch to side mount bottles and we are ready to continue our swimming in the cave , is beautiful over here, impossible to describe, you need to be in this place to understand what we feel. After 90 minutes into the dive we call the turn around , it is time to go back , we start to swim toward the exit of the cave , at 140 minutes we find our stage bottles , a little bit earlier but we do not stop a lot to take pictures on the return.

Another gas switch and we are again breathing from our stages , 35 minutes a we will be out of this amazing place.

We slowly move in the alley , take some other shot and finally get back to the surface.

We are trained Cave Instructors and dove those places many times but you need to see our eyes and faces after that dive , we smile and the only words are thank you each other ,it is impossible to explain that feeling , we get caved again and we are happy like puppies.

Now is the time to pack all the equipment taking only memories and leaving only bubbles.

Getting back on the highway we are ready for the most yummy roasted chicken in all the Riviera Maya.

In late afternoon we are back at the shop , store everything and prepare the equipment for another day in the Amazing Caves in the Riviera Maya.

The underwater world of the Riviera Maya is rich with incredible sights and unforgettable experiences. Let our guides take you to colorful reefs, vibrant island banks, and mysterious cenote caverns.

However, not everything can be witnessed by a novice diver. There is more to see for those with the skills to go deeper and take their exploration farther. It takes special techniques to stay safe diving in a cave, or anywhere else where you can’t simply swim straight up to reach the surface. On top of that, especially deep dives require special breathing mixtures and decompression stops to safely come back to the surface.

“Technical diving” is a catchall term for diving that requires more advanced skills and equipment than basic recreational SCUBA diving. Many of the underwater caves, wrecks, and cliffs along the Playa del Carmen coast require specialized technical diving skills and equipment to explore. By mastering these skills you will open new diving possibilities for yourself.

More than any other diving center in Playa del Carmen, Pluto Dive has the equipment and the expertise to teach these advanced diving skills. Our team of diving instructors are all trained and certified by our chief instructor, Scott Carnahan. We offer training in every level of diving offered by the International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers (IANTD)—that means we are prepared to teach the most advanced skills and cutting-edge equipment. Whatever your skill level, our courses can broaden your horizons and unlock dives that are currently beyond your reach. Our diving courses take only a few days, and almost all will let you put what you’ve learned into practice with actual diving.

A diver going into the water for the first time enters another world. Entering the deep water, and caves out of reach of the sun, takes you to still another world. We are proud to serve as guides and instructors who can make these amazing, impossible journeys possible. Wonderful expericence of Playa del Carmen Diving.

It’s pretty much impossible to get bored on the Riviera Maya. Whether visiting Playa del Carmen to relax on a tropical beach, scuba diving Playa del Carmen, or filling your days and nights with fun activities, there are always plenty of events and things to do. One of the most exciting activities to take part in during the day is diving in Playa del Carmen. While those of us at Pluto Dive can help you dedicate your days to experiencing fantastic underwater sights, the fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. The town of Playa del Carmen offers a fantastic variety of nightlife, including dozens of excellent restaurants, fun bars, and plenty of places for dancing the night away. The Blue Parrot is a classic beach bar where you can enjoy refreshing drinks while listening to tunes from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. The young at heart and those in search of a more upbeat party will find it at the thumping Coco Bongo. Diving Playa del Carmen is always exciting. Watching sharks, schools of brightly colored fish, and experiencing the vivid colors of corals is a must for any trip to the Riviera Maya. However, as much as we at Pluto Dive don’t like to admit it, there’s more to Playa del Carmen than diving in the beautiful waters of the Caribbean Sea and treating yourself to other-worldly views in a cenote. There are ruins to see, beaches to stroll, nightlife, and much more.

Even if you do plan to dive Riviera Maya for most of your trip, your non-diving partner might want to take the following tours:

Xcaret Park: Located just south of Playa del Carmen, this beautiful site has the distinction of being one of the most important ports of the Mayan civilization, an archeological site, and a theme park filled with fun activities and shows. Swim and snorkel in an underground river, see shows of traditional Mayan dances, and much more at this popular park.

Chichen Itza: This archeological site of an important Mayan city is a must for every visitor to the northern Yucatan Peninsula. The site is huge and includes a ball court, pyramids, and many other structures.

Cozumel Island: The famed Caribbean Island of Cozumel is easily visited as a day trip from Playa del Carmen. The island itself is beautiful but the diving around it is spectacular.

Combine your dives with these and other tours at the Mayan Riviera!

Playa del Carmen is located about an hour south of Cancun in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, and it is one of the most traveled to destinations in the Riviera Maya. Playa del Carmen has its advantages when compared to Cancun one of which is that the prices you usually pay will be a lot smaller and so will the crowds. There is still a lot to do the smaller city that is Playa del Carmen and in fact some will say that it is better located in the middle of it all.

Nightlife

There are plenty of choices for nightlife in Playa del Carmen and though it is smaller than Cancun, more than likely you will not need much more. The nightlife area of the city is located a couple of blocks from the beach with some of the clubs giving you a view of the water. The best places for you to party are PlayaCrawl, Coco Bongo, and Party Playa, but if the nightclub is not your scene then you will find Karaoke spots, bars and many other places to have all the fun once the sun goes down.

Food

In the same place where you will find the nightclubs you will also find great restaurants with menus from every corner in the world. This part of Playa del Carmen feels more like Miami Beach than it does anywhere in Mexico. The good news is that you can also find great spots to chow down some great Mexican food. You can find a few places for "Comida Corrida" which is the Mexican version of fast food, but don't think of a fast food place anywhere else. Comida corrida includes stew, main course and drink all with traditional dishes you could only find in Mexico. Mexican bakeries and regular fast food locations are available.

Shopping

Shopping enthusiasts will feel right at home in Playa del Carmen. There are a lot of places where you can buy souvenirs right by the beach. Most of these shops will take pesos or dollars, but if you want the best prices make sure to pay in pesos as the conversion rate at the stores is not always in your favor. You can also buy souvenirs from street vendors who will usually give you the best overall prices, and you should not be afraid to try to bargain with them. If they see that you are not buying because of the price they will reduce it a bit.

The Beach

The Beach in Playa del Carmen is very similar to those in Cancun but overall they tend to be less crowded. This Mexican beach vacation spot is well kept and if you go out early in the morning you will see the crews cleaning it every morning so that tourists can have the best experience when they visit. The sands are white and fine while the waters are crystal blue. If you visit from May to October the waters are sometimes lukewarm; which is something you cannot say of beaches to the north.
